Great class today!

Mark made us go over more “escapes” when your opponent is in the side mount. Wally refers to it as the “shrimp”. The move is to guard your opponents arm around his bicep and have your right hand over your chest, pop the hips and slide your right hand to the left side of your waist, quickly turn your body on the side in the shape of a V and quickly slide your left leg in the open space and into your guard.

We learned a reversal, where your opponent has you in a headlock, you put a bearhug around him and drive your legs and hips towards your head and at the same time turning him over and into the mounted position.

This is a great move. When you have your opponent in a headlock, place your right knee behind his left shoulder and grab the gi material on your right knee. Push his arm away and hook your ankle over his arm and then swing your left leg to make a figure 4 and then add pressure.

When you are on your guard, grab your opponents gi material around his wrist with your left hand, slide your right hand under his left knee and kind of do a bicep curl. Pull with your left hand and turn your body into an L shape with your opponent and drive your right leg down and at the same time roll and turn to your left, *important note, be sure to pivot your whole body, swing your left leg out as far as possible, you should end up feet to head, with his arm trapped under your right leg, sit up and roll over into mount position.

Another move would be, if your opponent posts up you can move to the triangle, remember to flatten him down, use your right leg and push his left leg away. Grab your left shin with your right hand and get into an L shape, lock your legs, push his arm across his face and pull down on his head.

Got to roll with Mophead today.

Pointers from Mophead and Mark: in the turtle position be sure to have your elbows and knees closed, that way your opponent can’t sink their foot in. Mark likes covering his head with one arm.

Armbars and Transitions

February 21st, 2008 by admins

Thursday Jiu Jitsu class was great. We went over armbars, some transitions and some exercises that are key to a lot of movements needed for jiu jitsu.

There is this one transition where your opponent is on both your feet in the air and you roll him over and you roll with him to a mounted position.

Another transition is when you are on your guard, you lock your opponents arm and grab the inside of his gi (by the bicep) and twist as if to say “Yes”. You then tuck your right arm under his left knee and flex and do a bicep curl at the same time place your left leg close to his right leg and with your right leg roll him over.

I got to roll with Rob and Brad. Brad made me tap twice.

First day back…

after being sick for a week. We went over arm bars again. I was partnered up with Rob. We learned 2 transitions for when your opponent is in the turtle position.

1. wrap your arms around your opponent locking your hands. driving your hips on his hips, switch over and plant your right knee next to his and turn over hooking your legs over his.

2. grab hold of his gi around his gut, driving your hip to his hip, pull his left knee back, tuck your head to the left and roll and hook your legs.

Chokes from the back position with leg hooks.

1. grab hold of the gi around his neck and grab the material on his left knee, sweep your right knee as far away as possible and pulling his knee with your left arm and with your left leg straighten it out and choke with the right arm

I got to roll with Rob, Wally and Thomas. I almost had Rob in an arm bar, but I lost it and gave up before the bell rang. Wally showed me some pointers. Thomas made me tap. I didn’t give it my all today, since it was my first day back, and I really want to find out how much I can push myself before going back to work.
