Breaking the grip

November 25th, 2008 by jgatienza

Breaking the grip 3 versions:
1. opponent grabs your pant sleeve, cup his wrist, drop the leg to the mat
2. opponent grabs your arm sleeve, cup his wrist with the opposite hand, and rip away from his fingers where it’s weakest. *NOTE: fingers are weakest going across the palm, not the direction that the fingers fold.
3. opponent grabs your collar with his right hand, pop open both sides of his sleeve and press against his wrist, post left leg on his hip and push away. *NOTE: it is always the opposite leg that you with use from where he grabs you.

We also chased around our partner while scootching on our butts. When we are on our butts we never have one leg laying on the mat, this allows your opponent to easily pass you. When you are on your butt lean forward for better balance and stronger base, keep your hands up

Lapel choke from the mount

Lapel chock from the mount

Starting from the mount position, you have your legs under hooked on your opponent. 1)  with your right hand reach deep into his collar, open it up if you have to. Post up with your left hand. Your balance should be 60:40 with your head on the right side of your opponent. 2) press the back of your wrist to the side of his neck, the motion will be like if you are flexing your forearms. 3) with your left hand go under your right arm and reach as deep as you into his collar. 4) pull him into you, hips and back should be straight with your weight mashing him, pull your elbows to the ceiling.

This isn’t an instant submission, so hold onto it for a little bit.

Knee on belly escapes

November 18th, 2008 by jgatienza

3 options for knee on belly escapes:

Option 1. 1) right knee up goes up against your opponents hip, push him with your knee, this will make him lose his balance. 2) drop your right leg to the mat and shrimp out from under his knee. 3) grab his right leg for a single leg.

Option 2. 1) if your opponent starts to attack, he will create space for you to be able to  shove your right hand under his right foot, s grip with your other hand and teeter-totter your elbows (right elbow goes up while the left elbow goes down). The result is your opponent losing balance. 2) be sure to stay in front of his right leg (otherwise you can fall into his half guard)  and get into side control.

Option 3. 1) with your left hand grab his belt and with your right hand grab his pant sleeve. 2) push away and get on the right side of your hip.

Tips: stay calm, with your elbows tight they can’t submit you.

Crossguard, choke, armbar, taking the back

November 14th, 2008 by jgatienza

Crossguard: starting from your guard. 1) reach across and grab your opponents sleeve. 2) break your opponent down by pulling him over with your legs and hips, take your left arm and put it in the inside of your opponents right hand and pull it over your head, so in the end you have your right hand holding on to your opponents gi behind your head. 3) with your left hand reach around your opponents arm and grab your opponents gi, locking his arm under yours, this is very tight. 4) put your right foot on his hip and your left foot on the mat and get to your right side.

From here you can:
Armbar: 1)
block your opponents left arm with your right hand. 2) throw your left leg over his on (on his belt). 3) squeeze your legs together and straighten your back

Choke: 1) grab the gi material either below his neck or his by his traps and place your forearm by the side of his throat and pull with your left and push with your right, kind of like a bow.

Crossguard and then taking the back: 1) reach across and grab your opponents right sleeve. 2) break your opponent down by pulling him over with your legs and hips and pull his arm across so that his on his right side is now on the mat. 3) get to the right side of your hip, with your left hand reach over and grab the bottom of his palm and wrist. 4) let go with your right hand and take his back.

You can also roll him over from step 3. Just plant your left foot on the mat and turn him over, you should end up on top.

Any thoughts on details that I should consider?
