Defending the standing guard pass

October 30th, 2009 by jgatienza

Scenario: they are using the toriano pass and they are passing to the right of you

  • when they pull your legs to the mat, don’t just lay there on your back, go upĀ as your legs and feet go down
  • break their grip from your left knee, left hand above his wrist and your right hand goes over his elbow
  • arm drag across your body and kick/drop your left leg to the mat
  • grab his right leg (koala style)
  • take your right leg and place it behind his heal, take your right hand and post it behind you
  • drive forward to sweep him
  • take your right hand and hold his pant leg down and kick your right leg out to prevent him getting half guard, place your right hand to his hip area

Using another technique with the same scenario above is to…

  • get a good deep grip in his collar
  • your knees have to be bent, “loading your spring” as the instructor I believe phrased it
  • scootch towards the left
  • as your opponent goes around, yank him down hard, this is a timing issue, this is much easier to accomplish if your opponent is moving to the right. If done right he will almost do a face plant to the mat
  • take his back

I’m always open to other details…

2 Turtle escapes

Scenario: you are in the turtle position and your opponent is on your right side

1) straighten your leg and roll over your knee when your opponent has his hands on your hips and pushing into you. you should finish in your guard or half guard.

2) if your opponent doesn’t have his hands on your hips, put your right arm between your legs and towards your left knee and roll over your right shoulder and into your guard.
