Defending the choke when I’m on my side (for this example I’m on my left side):
- get your left hand deep behind your collar as deep as you can and make a tight fist. They cannot choke you with a fist
- your right hand can either be in the inside of your left hand holding your lapel OR you can hold your lapel right under your left fist leaving no space for your opponent to hold onto
- keep your elbows tight to your body
- bring your right leg up to your elbow
- try to slightly get on your knees to the left and then torque your body back to the right
- place your left hand on your opponents shoulder and your right hand on his hip
- shrimp out and create space to put your knee thru and put him into your guard. Keep shrimping until you have sufficient space.
If your opponent traps your right arm simply go out the backdoor.
Passing the open guard:
- you have your opponents foot between your legs
- with your right hand reach under his left leg and grab his belt
- with your right hand grab the gi material around his right knee and keep it between your knees
- keep your head turned on your left side
- make your opponent feel he has you in his half guard
- start stretching him out, keep his foot inches on your calf, he will be uncomfortable and move it, that’s when you pass his leg and finish in side control.

2 techniques for stripping the grip
When you are standing
- if your opponent grabs your lapel on the left side
- with two hands grip his sleeve, step back with the same side foot that your opponent grabbed you with (left) and push away from you
2 take downs
1st take down technique
- your opponent grabs you on the left side lapel
- turn to your right and windmill your left arm under his right arm and lock it above his elbow, your right arm will under hook under his arm
- turn your left foot to the left, with your right arm do an “uppercut” under his left armpit, your shoulder should be above his not under
- fall straight down on your butt and roll and finish in side control
2nd take down technique
- your opponent grabs you on the left side lapel
- windmill your left arm over his right arm and duck under, both knees on the mat and underhook around his right leg, with your left hand grab his gi
- roll him over your shoulder, finish in side control
Submission (kneelock) using the 2nd take down
- instead of grabbing his gi or under hooking his leg, use your left foot and place it behind his right foot and push him backwards, both of your arms should be around his body
- with your right foot lock your feet together, do not use a triangle lock, drive your hips forward for the submission

Starting from the knees sweep
- right hand grabs right lapel, left hand grabs right side loose material behind the elbow
- right foot steps on the outside of opponents right leg
- keep elbows close to your body, twist and pull your opponent and pivot your right foot
finish knee on belly
To defend knee on belly
- protect your neck if your opponent has a grip in your collar
- take your right hand and place it on his right foot
- bump over your right shoulder and on the way down push your opponents leg into your half guard
Submission from half guard
- if your opponent gets you in his half guard your hand is still in his collar
your opponent will try to shrimp out and get to his side
- sprawl with your left leg and drop your left side armpit over the side of his head and reach for his belt
- switch your hips so that you are on your left side hip
- flex and tighten down with your left arm/lats and pull with your right hand for the choke
collar choke, knee on belly, sweep
