Half Guard Escape (from the top), Armbar from mount

July 23rd, 2010 by jgatienza

Left to right: Dustin Denes, Rob Handshy, Gerard Atienza

Half guard escape (from the top)

Scenario: I am in my opponents half guard with my right leg wrapped up

  • plant both hands on the mat
  • get up on your feet
  • clear my right knee pasth his thigh
  • cut his right leg using your right knee and point and drive it towards my left heel, point your toes so that it slips past his legs
  • with your left hand grab the back of his right tricep and get your hips down and sit thru with your right leg behind his right shoulder
  • keep your head down so he can’t frame up and create space

Be prepared IF my opponent underhooks my arm when I put my hands to the mat and pop up on my feet:

  • do a whizzer on his arm and grab his right side lapel
  • cut his right leg using your right knee and point and drive it towards my left heel, point your toes so that it slips past his legs
  • he will want to turn and get on his knees, stay on your toes and spin around his back
  • he will be in the turtle position, you should end up after spinning on his right side
  • your left foot will be on the mat behind his rear, your right knee will be on the mat, this is important because then your opponent will not be able to reach for it
  • left elbow on the left side of his hip and try and get your right hand under his chin and grab his lapel

Mount armbar technique (2nd half of the private)

Scenario: you are in the mount position

  • you have your feet grapevined or crossed (whatever you prefer) and your left hand is posted far above his head
  • with your right arm, work it to his right arm and grab the back of his triceps
  • pull it across your chest and apply pressure, your right foot comes to his gut with the toes pointing to the 2 o’clock  position, left leg lays parallel to his back
  • apply the kimura grip on his arm
  • swing your left leg and clear his head, try and swing it past his head
  • squeeze the knees together, flatten him out by straightening your legs over his head and keeping it heavy
  • suck him in if you have to to get your hips under his shoulder, do not give him any space to get his shoulder to the mat
  • finish the armbar

Note: think of yourself as a tripod, if you only have 2 points it’s easy to bump and roll you

Choke and armbar

July 7th, 2009 by jgatienza

Scenario: you have your opponent in your guard

  • your right hand is deep into his collar
  • your left hand goes over his head and grabs the loose gi material on his shoulder
  • twist your wrists to tighten the choke

A different variation of the overhand choke is you have your opponent broken down

  • with your left hand wrap your arm around his neck and slide your thumb in his collar approximately on the left side of his neck
  • work your right hand into his collar
  • pull your opponent’s head under your left arm and choke

Armbar with the use of his gi
Scenario: you have your opponent in your guard and he is wanting to posture up, sometimes your opponent’s gi is yanked out of his belt

  • using your right hand pull on his gi and get the slack out, grab it about the length of your forearm
  • wrap his gi above his elbow and over his forearm and lock it down
  • break your guard, post your right foot on his hip, use your left leg and break him down across his back
  • swing your right leg across his face
  • you can release the gi and hold on to his arm for the armbar

Position 3, arm bar and kimura

June 18th, 2009 by jgatienza

Scenario: you are in position 3 (north south) on top of your opponent

  • you are in your position 3 holding position
  • place your left hand under his left arm and rest it on his chest
  • turn him to his right side by walking your legs around him
  • slide your left leg across his back and swing your right leg over his face
  • while going backwards bring your left knee up and pinch your knees together and place your left hand to your shoulder and your right hand to your ribs for the arm bar

If your opponent recognizes he is going to be arm barred and locks his hands together

  • place a kimura grip on his left arm
  • using your hips and shoulders twist to the right and up to break his grip
  • turn to the left for the kimura

Taking the back from the guard, 2 armbars

June 9th, 2009 by jgatienza

First time back from my little snip-snip and the big friggin’ knot in my back and everything seems to be working fine.

Scenario: You have your opponent in your guard

  • take both your hands and grip the ends of his right gi sleeve
  • use your legs and hips and bring him into you and at the same time pull his right arm across your body pushing it away from you
  • with your left hand grab his lat or his right sleeve, open your guard and straighten your left leg and move your hip out from under him
  • post up on your elbow and work your right leg out, keeping working until you take his back

2 armbars from the guard

Scenario: you are trying to take his back from your guard (using the technique described above) but he posts on his left arm

  • close your guard above his right shoulder with your left leg to keep him broken down
  • your oppontent it trying to posture up so he has his left arm on the mat, release his right sleeve and wrap your right arm and make a gable grip above his left elbow
  • trap his hand between your shoulder and ear and pull his elbow in hyperextending for the submission

If he defends and pulls out

  • attack the right arm again
  • swing your left leg over his face, squeeze the knees

Toriano, knee on belly to armbar to a collar choke

May 5th, 2009 by jgatienza

Todays class we worked on the toriano pass, x-pass and from there knee on belly to armbar and if they protect their arm and put it on the ground go for the collar choke.

Toriano:

  • grab the gi from the inside of the knees and slam his feet to the floor
  • apply pressure downward and keep your feet back and begin to walk around your opponent, going either left or right of him

Knee on belly to an armbar:

  • your knee lays across your opponent’s belt line, on the but, it makes it harder for him to push your knee off.
  • right hand goes as deep as you can into his collar, left hand goes behind his elbow holding on to his gi. Pull him up to get a deeper grip into his collar if you have to. Remember to keep his right arm in front of you
  • slide your right foot and shin and dorsi flex it around his right armpit
  • with your left hand grab your shoulder, be sure to have his arm trapped, this way he can’t defend the armbar.
  • swing your left leg over his face and roll back to your butt and squeeze your knees for the armbar

Opponent defends the armbar:

Scenario: he sees the armbar coming from the knee on belly and puts his elbows to the mat.

  • with your left hand grab the gi material over his left shoulder
  • trap his right arm with your left leg
  • apply the collar choke and pull your elbows to your butt
