Defending the rear naked choke, headlock escape

March 5th, 2009 by jgatienza

This class was more street self defense oriented.

Defending the rear naked choke (standing up): 1) immediately protect your neck, grab his arm with both hands and pull down and tuck your chin in (this might be uncomfortable, but it’s better than getting choked out). 2) bend your knees slightly and with your right foot place it behind your opponents foot (you are not hooking it). 3)with your left foot take steps around him all the while pivoting on your right foot, you will break his hold , his balance and then you can force him to the ground. You have his arm you can go to knee on belly or finish it with an armbar.

Headlock escape: a lot of the times you get put in this position. 1) put your left hand on your opponents hip. 2) step to the side (so you make a “T” with your opponents body). 3) place your right hand on the inside of his left leg. 4) shoot your right leg between his legs and fall backwards. 5) as you are falling backwards, push with your right hand so that he doesn’t roll on top of you and with your left hand move it towards his right shoulder so that he doesn’t roll over it or trap it.

Gracie T, control and then escape, knee or punch: this position looks like a T, your opponents body and your body should make a T if you are looking from above. His shoulder should be on your chest. 1) your left hand is around his hips and your right hand is holding his left wrist. 2) snake your left hand and S hook his neck. 3) make a grip with both hands around his neck and push him down  between your chin, squeeze your elbows together to apply pressure and to help control him. 4) you can punch, knee or push him away from here, you can use him to shield your self from his friends.

Kimura

This week I am home on vacation in Thunder Bay, Ontario, CA. I am training at Leadingedgemma.com. They mostly train in no gi. For warm-ups we did shrimping excercises, running and break falling (forward and backwards).

Kimura: we start off with our opponent in an open guard, you grab hold of his left wrist with your right hand, pull yourself up and take your left hand over his right arm and figure four it and grab your right wrist. Hold your opponent down with your right leg over his back and twist his arm so that you are trying to point his hand to his head.

One of the guys I worked with gave me pointers on the rear naked choke. When I am executing a rear naked choke the choking arm should be on the ground, I can use the other hand to help sink the choke deeper by pressing against his nose to move his head, once I have sunk the choke I grab my bicep and put my right hand behind his head.

Although this was more MMA style class, another fighter was telling me he never gives up his back, because then he doesn’t see where the punches are coming from.
