1st sweep
Starting from your closed guard
- your opponent has a hold of your gi
- take both hands under his arms and use your core/legs to bring him closer/on top of you
- wrap your left arm around his right arm and grap his lapel, use your right hand to help if needed
- once that is established, open your guard, push away on his left bicep and get your right foot inbetween his legs
- curl up to him and roll backwards while straightening your right leg for the sweep
- finish in the mount
2nd sweep
Starting from your knees
- arm drag your opponent, trapping his left arm, get into the butterfly guard
- keep tight on that arm, keep your head on the left side of his shoulder
- with your right hand grab the gi material around his knee
- roll backwards and stack your opponent over you, straighten out your right arm
- finish in side control

Sweeps from the butt
If your opponent is standing and is ready to pass:
- he has his right leg applying pressure to your left leg place your right foot on his left leg and with your left foot apply the da la riva hook
- straighten your right leg out and kick it out between his leg as momentum to get on your butt koala grip his right leg wrap your left arm around his leg and grab your lapel
- scootch back and get your left leg in front of his leg and place your ankle over his ankle/foot
- slide your left arms down to the crook of his knee roll backwards and finish in side control
*Note this was taught a few weeks ago and I am now just writing about this so details may be off, but the gist is there
sweep
May 6th, 2010 by jgatienza
Starting from the knees sweep
- right hand grabs right lapel, left hand grabs right side loose material behind the elbow
- right foot steps on the outside of opponents right leg
- keep elbows close to your body, twist and pull your opponent and pivot your right foot
finish knee on belly
To defend knee on belly
- protect your neck if your opponent has a grip in your collar
- take your right hand and place it on his right foot
- bump over your right shoulder and on the way down push your opponents leg into your half guard
Submission from half guard
- if your opponent gets you in his half guard your hand is still in his collar
your opponent will try to shrimp out and get to his side
- sprawl with your left leg and drop your left side armpit over the side of his head and reach for his belt
- switch your hips so that you are on your left side hip
- flex and tighten down with your left arm/lats and pull with your right hand for the choke

Scenario: you are on the bottom and have your opponent in your half guard and he also using the chicken wing
- with your right hand pull the end of his gi on the far side and feed it between his legs to your left hand. *Note if you are having problems reaching it scootch further down closer to his leg and be sure to be reaching around his leg and not over his back.
- once you have a good grip on his gi, post up on your left elbow and push against him, switch your legs (left leg over his leg)
- if he’s pushing into you, throw your hand under his left leg and sweep him.
- if he doesn’t push you can push just roll him over
If you are having a difficult time trying to achieve the sweep explained above an alternate may be to go for this choke.
- your opponent has you in a chicken wing, turn your trapped hand inside so that it is now between your bodies.
- with your right hand open up his collar and reach deep with your left hand
- with your right hand reach around his head and pull down at the same time turn your left hand in and lift your left elbow up
This may not finish your opponent but it opens up a sweep for you.

Spread arm and leg out and sweep
Scenario: starting from your guard
- grab your opponents gi around his elbow with your left hand with your right hand grab the end of his pant sleeve
- spread him out, meaning raise your elbows like you are doing dumbbell flies
- open your guard, throw your left leg out and with your right leg bring it across your opponents body and sweep. kind of like a scissor sweep.
- you should finish in the mount
Standing sweep
Scenario: you are in your opponents guard and he stands up
- loosen your guard so it slips around his knees
- squeeze your knees together and he will fall down
Note: if he is to strong to squeeze your knees together you can straighten your legs out to try to sweep him.
Cross arm/under leg hook sweep
Scenario: starting from your guard
- pull your opponents arm across both your bodies breaking him down
- with your left hand reach across his back and grab above his lats (armpit area)
- with your right hand shove under his left knee and hook it and sweep him and finish on top of him.
Note: swinging your left leg out and using that momentum with the aid of your right leg should complete the sweep with minimum effort
Grip fighting: 2 techniques
Scenario: your opponent has a grip on your front lapel
- with both hands grab each side of your lapel and pull it open
Scenario: your opponent has a grip on your front lapel
- with your right hand pop open his sleeve and grab it
- place your right hand under his hand and over your wrist
- push diagonally away from you
