Todays class we worked on the toriano pass, x-pass and from there knee on belly to armbar and if they protect their arm and put it on the ground go for the collar choke.
Toriano:
- grab the gi from the inside of the knees and slam his feet to the floor
- apply pressure downward and keep your feet back and begin to walk around your opponent, going either left or right of him
Knee on belly to an armbar:
- your knee lays across your opponent’s belt line, on the but, it makes it harder for him to push your knee off.
- right hand goes as deep as you can into his collar, left hand goes behind his elbow holding on to his gi. Pull him up to get a deeper grip into his collar if you have to. Remember to keep his right arm in front of you
- slide your right foot and shin and dorsi flex it around his right armpit
- with your left hand grab your shoulder, be sure to have his arm trapped, this way he can’t defend the armbar.
- swing your left leg over his face and roll back to your butt and squeeze your knees for the armbar
Opponent defends the armbar:
Scenario: he sees the armbar coming from the knee on belly and puts his elbows to the mat.
- with your left hand grab the gi material over his left shoulder
- trap his right arm with your left leg
- apply the collar choke and pull your elbows to your butt

Breaking guard:
- with your left hand grab your opponents belt and keep it firm to his gut
- with your right hand, reach around and grab the gi material on the inside of his left knee
- raise yourself up on your knees and place your left knee to his butt
- push down with your right hand on his knee and straighten your right leg back to break his guard
- from here you can on the inside, you can pass over his left leg or if he flattens his right leg pass over that.
- finish in side control
Toriano pass: this is a perfect compliment to the technique explained above.
- since your right hand is already gripping the inside of his left knee, grab the gi material on the other knee
- get a good base by spreading your feet apart and far back as you can which will put all your weight over his knees (think of the position if you are doing close grip bench except your feet are spread apart)
- walk around him, if you are walking clockwise, bend your left arm over his right knee/leg so that your arms don’t cross each other
- continue to walk until you are practically in the north south position and get into side control
Mount:
- once you are in the mount, squeeze your knees tight to your opponents sides, keep your knees off the ground
- keep your body square with his
- your head should be on one side of his head
- tighten your core and try to curl your body to your knees
- your hands should be infront of you like you are flying
- if your opponent tries to push on your knees, grab behind his elbows and pull up
Americana from the mount:
- lock the kimura grip on his arm, right elbow should be by the side of his face
- pull down on his arm towards his side
- slide your hips off his gut and bring your left foot to his side and your right knee tight to his side and squeeze
- finish the submission by wiping his knuckles on the mat and lifting his elbows up, torque your upper body
Submissions from the north south position (position 3) They are the collar choke, armbar and kimura
Collar choke:
- slide your hand under his arm and lay if flat on your opponents stomach
- lock the kimura grip and get your left knee to his side and get your right foot on the side of his head
- if you can grab his belt, great if not use the bottom of his gi to lock down his arm
- reach in to his collar with your thumb inside and throw your right leg back and drop your right elbow across his neck to the mat
Armbar:
- slide your hand under his arm and lay if flat on your opponents stomach
- lock the kimura grip and get your left knee to his side and get your right foot on the side of his head
- fall back to your butt and at the same time bring your left knee up, but keep your foot behind his shoulder
- squeeze your knees together and finish the submission
Kimura:
- if your opponent defends the armbar, the right foot that is by your opponents head you will drop the knee over his left bicep causing him to break his grip. The left knee by his side is replaced with your foot. Try to do this move at the same time.
- turn your body to the left for the submission

Today we did something a little different. We will be doing basic warm-ups for a month, this month it is:
10 reps of each on both sides
• cross collar choke
• armbar
• scissor sweep
Passing the guard: once your opponent opens his guard 1) your right knee goes to your left knee and circles clockwise to block his legs from closing again. 2) your elbows should be tight against you and on the outside of your knee.
Keeping your hands close to you will allow you to defend easily.
Toriano pass: 1) grab the material on the outside of your opponents knees, there shouldn’t be any slack for him to move away from 2) with straight arms push his knees together and nail it to the mat (press your knuckles on to his knees). 3) your legs are behind you and walk around him into side control.
Using your shoulder when you pass is also acceptable.

Butterfly guard: 1) get your feet in between your opponents legs. 2) get your left arm under his right arm and reach around and grab his belt, right arm reaches around his left arm and grabs the gi material behind his tricep and press your head against his throat. 3) pull and turn to make him lose his balance and kick your left leg out to sweep him.
Passing the guard from your opponents butterfly: your opponent has you in his butterfly guard. 1) get your arms under his, and grab his sides and really suck him into you. 2) kick out your right leg so that it is straight and place it next to your left leg. 3) with either hand you can reach under and grab his trapped leg (right), grab the foot or ankle or even the gi. 4) keep your hips low, keeping pressure on his leg and hips pin it to the mat and walk around it to side control
Toriano pass: an explosive pass 1) grab your opponents gi material in the inside of his knees and push it down, so his feet is on the mat. 2) push his legs to one side (for this instruction, it is to the right). 3) drive your left shoulder into his gut to pass.
