From side control (position 1), get to position 2. when your opponent brings his hands up to protect, roll your hips over his right arm, swim your left hand in front of his left hand and lock up the kimura grip and finish up with the americana, if that fails roll over onto north/south and go for the straight armlock.

From position 2 you can apply an armlock, throw your leg over his head to the other side of his face, your left hand does not grab his right arm but is placed on your hip, extend your hips up and sandwich his arm with your left arm and torso for the armlock.

you are in the de la riva position, you can grab your opponents sleeve (right) and his left lapel, or you can grab both sleeves, once you are in that position place your right foot above his knee cap, push with your right foot and pull his arms over your head for the sweep.

Remember to have his foot between your butt cheeks.

Another sweep from the de la riva position is to control the sleeve, with your left hand release his sleeve and grab his heel, unwind your left leg from his right leg and place your left foot on his hip, with your right foot hook it behind the bend of his right knee. Push with your left foot while holding onto his right heel an pull with your right foot for the sweep and finish the sweep between his legs with your right knee up ready for the pass.

Taking the back from the de la riva position

you have your opponent in the de la riva and you want to take his back.

grab his sleeve with your right hand and with your left hand grab his heel, remember to have your pinky on the mat.

extend your left leg and hook your left foot over his left leg, push away with your right foot

roll over your right should extending yourself

take your right foot and hook it behind his right leg, let go of his heel and grab his belt

load him onto you and straighten your legs out to get him on his butt and then sink your hooks in

mount drill
starting from side control, your hip pushing back his right arm, throw your leg over for the mount, grab his left arm, turn your right leg towards his left arm, swing your left leg over, you should be sitting on your shins with his arm trapped between your legs, slide back to side control and repeat from the opposite side

mount escape
your opponent mounts, quickly place your hands on his hips, feet go to your butt and bump up and quickly press him at the highest point of the bump, slide both knees between his legs and let his weight fall on them and roll on to your butt.

If you can’t get both feet between his legs but you can only get one (the left one) take your right foot and place it on his hips, push away with your right foot and go for a straight ankle lock, remember when applying this technique to roll to your right side and turn your head to your right and extend your back.

1. your opponent is on his right side with you on the back with a over under grip, with your left arm raise his left arm and swing your left leg over to get the first hook and roll over to your right side to get the second hook

2. your opponent is on his right side with you on the back with a over under grip, your opponent decides to roll to his knees, sneak your right leg around his right leg for the first hook and roll him over to get the 2nd hook.

3. your opponent is on his right side with you on the back with a over under grip, again your opponent decides to roll to his knees, hold tightly and backpack him, squeeze your knees together, if he rolls you roll.

All 3 techniques require that you place your chin in the crook of his traps and neck. Very important to have over unders.

Choke and turtle sweep
If your opponent is in the turtle position, your hip is on his hip, right hand is tight around his waist, with your left hand grab his knee and pull it open, he will want to bring his left elbow in to protect himself from you putting your foot in there, when he defends slide your left hand down across his chest and bring it across on the other side of his neck with your palm facing up, lock up your grip and squeeze for the tap. The grip is left hand palm facing up with your right hand slide the thumb between your left pointing finger and middle finger, the right four fingers wrap around the bottom of the left palm.

Turtle sweep
Your opponent is in the turtle position, this is a quick movement, you cannot stall. From the left side, hip to hip. Your right hand is tight around your opponents side, with your left hand grab the inside of his left knee and pull it open, slide your left arm all the way across under his body until you can lock both of your hands together, left shoulder to the mat, roll him over and finish in side control.

When I have my opponent in north/south I need to have over unders on him. With my right arm under his armpit and my left arm under his arm and on his chest I apply pressure on him and turn him to his right side and apply the arm bar. If he defends and clasps his hands together I go for the kimura. I bring my knees around his head, I lock up the kimura grip on his arm, I must put my right knee to the mat over his bicep. I keep tight on his arm, curled up until I’m ready to break his grip, tug, tug, big tug and finish with the kimura.

If he turtles up, and you are on his right side, grab the gi material on his left shoulder and left hip and pull him towards you. It’s very important at that moment to get your left arm under his left arm and to control his head. From here you can attack with an armbar, kimura, collar choke, ezekiel or you can take his back and finish him with other submissions.

If you have your opponent on his side you must have your arm under his arm (your left arm under his left arm), if he tries to roll away from you, you lean back, if he rolls into you, you lean into him.

You are in side control. With your right hand pull his gi out, grabbing close to the end of it pull it towards his head. Get head control, once you establish that feed the end of his gi to your left hand (it doesn’t have to be tight). Place your right elbow to his left hip make him think that you are going knee on belly but when he defends you place your left knee on his chest, when he defends that you place your right knee on his belly while you take your left knee off his chest. Grab his lapel on his right side with your right hand, post on your foot and pull him hard towards you. Let go of his gi with your left hand and while you are taking his back, reach in front of his neck and grab his lapel, place a foot between his legs and fall to the right and establish your second hook while you grab the other side of his lapel for the choke.

Or you can choose to place your right arm across the back of his head for a choke, kind of like an ezekiel.

Your opponent has you in side control, he has head control and he has one arm between your legs. Place your right hand on his hip, try to get the left arm under his chin and grab place your hand on his left shoulder. Shrimp out, with the space created, bring your right knee across his belly. Throw your left leg over his shoulders. Straighten out your back, while using your knees to break his grip on you. You can pull guard, go for a choke or grab his sleeves.

An alternate would be, to push his head away and throw up a triangle, if he loosens his grip go for a kimura, if he tries to escape by placing his head on the mat, place your right elbow across his belt and roll him over, do not open your legs, once you are on top of him, switch arm control, replace your left arm with your right arm, press your head tight to his arm, place the blade of your arm under his tricep but below his elbow and go for an armbar. You can also finish on top with a kimura.

So you are going to grab his sleeve with your left hand, your other hand can grab the side of his knee.
