Starting from the closed guard
- get an overhook on your opponents arm and grab his collar
- open your guard and get on the right side of your hip
- put your right hand on his left bicep and place your feet on his hips
- shrimp out but still hold on to his collar, pull your right leg up to your chest and then over his shoulder to lock up the triangle
if your opponent grabs your leg to prevent the triangle
- continue to hold on to the overhook and collar, place your right hand over his right shoulder
- kick off his hip a little and get on the right side of your shoulder and straighten your back
- apply pressure downward by putting your left knee over his right shoulder
if he tries to square up with you
- keep your knee/shin in front of him
- with your right hand reach over his shoulder and grab his gi
- use your right knee as a guide and lift your elbow up for the choke
Butterfly sweep
- starting from the closed guard
- get an overhook on your opponents arm and grab his collar
- open your guard and get on the right side of your hip
- work your feet between his legs and hook them in the bend of his knees
- control his wrist with your right hand, do not grip the sleeve
- if he passes on the right, tuck his left hand with your right hand between his legs and extend with your left leg
- if he passes on the left, push his hand away and extend with your right leg
- stay close to him and finish on top

Butterfly guard sweep: starting from the guard. 1) open your guard, grab your opponents sleeves and place your feet on his hips. 2) get on your right side, your right foot drops to the mat between his legs. 3) your left leg is raises up and you shoot your left foot between his leg. Use that momentum to make you sit up. 4) reach around and grab his belt with your left hand, your right hand goes to the gi material on his knee. 5) roll to your right side and straighten your right leg out for the sweep
Now, if he grabs your right leg follow the steps from 1-3, 4) grab his wrist with your right hand and shove it between his legs, needle your right leg under your left leg and straighten it out and “kick” him over for side control.
Another alternative is if he posts up on his feet 5) reach behind his left foot and wrap your right arm around it. 6) pull your right leg between his legs and straighten it out and get on your back. 7) with your right leg push off and roll him over.
We did an exercise where we switched from side to side when we are in butterfly guard. One hand should be holding onto the belt and the other on the gi material on his knee. So if your opponent decides to go the opposite direction, be sure to grab onto the belt with the other hand first before letting go with the other hand and then switch hips. *Tip: let your opponent do the work.

butterfly guard, sweep

Butterfly guard: 1) get your feet in between your opponents legs. 2) get your left arm under his right arm and reach around and grab his belt, right arm reaches around his left arm and grabs the gi material behind his tricep and press your head against his throat. 3) pull and turn to make him lose his balance and kick your left leg out to sweep him.
Passing the guard from your opponents butterfly: your opponent has you in his butterfly guard. 1) get your arms under his, and grab his sides and really suck him into you. 2) kick out your right leg so that it is straight and place it next to your left leg. 3) with either hand you can reach under and grab his trapped leg (right), grab the foot or ankle or even the gi. 4) keep your hips low, keeping pressure on his leg and hips pin it to the mat and walk around it to side control
Toriano pass: an explosive pass 1) grab your opponents gi material in the inside of his knees and push it down, so his feet is on the mat. 2) push his legs to one side (for this instruction, it is to the right). 3) drive your left shoulder into his gut to pass.
