Escaping side control
When you are in your opponents side control:
- just chill out when he is in position 1
- when you are in someones side control you should be controlled in three points (head, hip and side)
- when your opponent takes one of those points away that’s when you need to fight to get out, shrimp and/or bump out

Escape from half guard
Scenario: you are in your opponents half guard and you are wanting to escape
- you must fight for that under hook
- you can place your left arm either under his head or on the side of his head (left ear) and your right arm under his left arm and lock your hands together
- your opponent will try to lock you down, figure four your opponents leg and switch your hips (get on the left side of your hip)
- break your figure four and crawl your right foot up to his butt, as far as possible, his legs should be sliding down to your shins by this point
- with your right elbow push his leg over to free your leg or wait for him to open up his guard
- when he opens up his guard straighten your right leg and throw it as far back behind you, he will try to bridge into you, this will stop the momentum from you being swept
- when you goes back flat on his back get to side control

Escape side control to half butterfly sweep to armbar: you are in your opponents side control: 1) bump and shrimp to your side and slide your left hand and place it on his right torso. 2) your left foot is perpendicular to the mat, shoot your right foot under it and you will finish in a belly down north south position, get to your knees. 3) your opponent may continue to push forward (wrestlers do this), roll back and over your right foot and hook it between his legs. 4) you should have both of your arms under his armpits, continue to roll and sweep him. Try to finish in side control and not in his half guard. 5) grab behind your opponents right elbow and lift up and over and then place your hand on his chest or on your right shoulder. 6) pop up and lay your right leg flat behind his back and your left foot should be on the left side of his face. 7) hook your opponents right arm with your left arm and grab your shoulder, with your right arm hug his trapped arm and place it on your belt.
when you sit back raise your right knee up but keep your right foot behind his shoulder, squeeze your knees together to finish the armbar.
An alternative to going to a half butterfly would be to do a single leg and finish off in side control. Remember to keep your head in the inside not on the outside of his body.
