Pull down, ezekiel

September 23rd, 2008 by jgatienza

Pull down: 1) your opponent is standing above you and you have a hold of his lapel with your right hand. 2) you are on your butt (left leg on the mat and the right foot is on the mat) and he is circling to the left to try to pass you. 3) he tries to go the other way and you immediately pull him down to the ground an try to take his back.

This is a very simple move. You can really face plant your opponent if you time it just right.

Modified ezekiel: 1) if the pull down doesn’t work and he barrells into you, with your right hand still on his lapel simply wrap your arm around his head, basically you are putting his head under your arm. 2) roll him over on you, so you are now flat on your back with him on top of you. 3) your left arm goes over his right arm and under his head, pull with your right hand and left hand goes up (like a scissor), this will result in a choke.

Ezekiel, anaconda

North south escape: find out the details on how to do this again.

Ezekiel from north south position: your opponent is on top of you, simply slide your left hand under his chin and with your right hand grab your gi sleeve and apply the choke.

Anaconda: if you find your opponent in a turtle position and your body is at the top of his head, sink your right hand under his body all the way thru to the other side under his right armpit. From there grab your left bicep or gi and place your left and by his side, squeeze your arms together, dump yourself and him onto your left side and walk towards him for the submission.

Rolling review: went light with my partner

Kesa gatame, shoulder lock

August 7th, 2008 by jgatienza

Holding position (kesa gatame): starting from position 1 (left arm under the head, right arm by opponents side, hip driving to the hip, and on your toes), go to position 2, except you pull your opponents head up and replace it with your right hand, lift your opponents right arm and shove your right leg under it and grab your pant gi just above the crook behind your knee. Push with your left leg to keep pressure and prevent him from rolling you.

Shoulder lock: from the holding position (explained above) keep your elbows close to your body. Your opponent is going to want to shrimp out, when he moves his right hand, control it and lock it down with your right leg and ”figure 4″ it to lock it in place. *Note his trapped arm must be bent, with his hand close to his head before you apply pressure with your right leg. From there you can take both hands and lift his head, or you can go for an Ezekiel choke (forearm/sleeve choke).

If you can’t hook his arm, you can transition to an armlock, this is difficult to do and has a 20% chance of success. To do that, when your opponent fights and his arm is straight, take your left leg and hook it, squeeze your knees together a drag your left foot back.

Defending from this position: go to your side like you are going to shrimp out, build a frame and place your hands just below his jawline and push up and away, raise your hips and place your left leg around your opponents face and drive it down. You end up rolling on top, at this point you may still be in a headlock, step over your opponents with your right leg, take the blade of your hand and push down on his neck and raise your head up. *Note from here you can go for an armbar.

Clock choke and modified Ezekiel

April 17th, 2008 by jgatienza

Clock choke: your opponent is in the turtle position and your hip should be on his hip applying pressure, you slide your hand deep into you his collar, switch your hips so that your right leg is in front and begin to walk around his head.

To defend this you need to protect your neck, when your opponent grabs your gi use your thumb and squeeze it between his thumb and your gi and push away. With your left hand grab the sleeve on his left arm. Post up on your right foot and shoot your left foot thru. Keep your armpit and elbow close to his shoulder. This will drive him to the ground and then proceed to mount him.

Another way to defend is to hold on to his right arm, get your hips out from under his, roll to the right and as you are both rolling, raise your left leg to help him roll over you and then proceed to mount.

Modified Ezekiel: You have your opponent’s back, you have a grip on his collar, he is defending by pulling on your arm, let go of his collar and grab your sleeve on your left arm and slide it behind his head and squeeze.

Another choke (I’m not sure of the name): You are in mounting your opponent, grab the collar on his gi (right side), keep your left leg tight to his back to prevent him from rolling, sweep your right foot under his left shoulder and mash him, reach around his head with your left arm and feed his collar that you are holding with your right hand (tip: slide your right hand down a little on the collar to be able to reach your left hand). With your free right hand grab his left pant gi and sit down for the choke.
