2 techniques for stripping the grip
When you are standing

  • if your opponent grabs your lapel on the left side
  • with two hands grip his sleeve, step back with the same side foot that your opponent grabbed you with (left) and push away from you

2 take downs

1st take down technique

  • your opponent grabs you on the left side lapel
  • turn to your right and windmill your left arm  under his right arm and lock it above his elbow, your right arm will under hook under his arm
  • turn your left foot to the left, with your right arm do an “uppercut” under his left armpit, your shoulder should be above his not under
  • fall straight down on your butt and roll and finish in side control

2nd take down technique

  • your opponent grabs you on the left side lapel
  • windmill your left arm  over his right arm and duck under, both knees on the mat and underhook around his right leg, with your left hand grab his gi
  • roll him over your shoulder, finish in side control

Submission (kneelock) using the 2nd take down

  • instead of grabbing his gi or under hooking his leg, use your left foot and place it behind his right foot and push him backwards, both of your arms should be around his body
  • with your right foot lock your feet together, do not use a triangle lock, drive your hips forward for the submission

September 28th, 2008 by jgatienza

Half guard escape: 1) flatten your opponent out on his back. 2) walk counter clockwise, small steps with your foot. 3) your left hand should be under his head holding the gi or on the mat. 4) left side of your hip hoes to the mat. 5) push away on his left knee with your hand, free as much of your reight leg as you can. 6) put your right knee on the mat, you will roll just a little to accomplish this. 7) take your left foot and hook it on his right leg to free your right leg, proceed to mount.

Half guard sweep: 1) when your opponent is on top of you and you have him in your half guard, get your left arm under his right arm. 2) your right arm should be on his side. 3) break your half guard. 4) get on the right side of your hip. 5) with your right arm grab his left arm to prevent him from posting. 6) with your left foot hook it under his right leg and roll him over and proceed to side control.

Half guard escape into a knee lock: 1) you are in your opponents half guard. 2) turn perpendicular to his body and sit on his right leg. 3) grab his foot and pull up.

Footlock, kneelock

September 11th, 2008 by jgatienza

Footlock: with your opponent starting from the De la Riva position, his right foot is on your thigh/hip area, grab his foot with your right hand, your thumb should be gripping under his big toe and your pinky should be by his pinky toe, apply some pressure on it to make it uncomfortable, by now his foot should not be resting on your leg. Turn to your right and plant your left hand on the mat and roll over your shoulder while still holding on to his foot slip on the kimura grip on it and twist your torso for the submission. This is a very fast and dynamic movement.

Kneelock: with your opponent starting from the De la Riva position, his right foot is on your thigh/hip area, put your right hand to your right leg, like a “noose” over his left leg. Drag your left leg over his left leg which is up on your leg. Dorsi flex your your left foot by his hip, your left knee should be by his butt. Squeeze your knees together and push your hips forward for the tap.
