starting from mount, open up the right side lapel and slide your thumb until your fist is on the mat and that the back of your forearm is on his neck, post on your head, take your left hand and pull on his collar and slide your right hand deeper, using your right forearm turn his neck up, your opponent should be trying to defend it, once he raises his hands to defend slide your left hand, thumb in into his lapel under your right arm and grab his other collar and finish the choke

Starting from mount, using your left arm try to pull his right arm up to about shoulder height (if possible), get your right arm under his head, once under reach and grab under his right armpit, with your left hand push on his right elbow to get your head on the outside of his arm, use the master grip, post your head on the mat, point your right foot out by turning on your knee and unmount him, get your hip to his hip, slide your left elbow below/under his shoulder and squeeze

Left to right: Dustin Denes, Rob Handshy, Gerard Atienza
Half guard escape (from the top)
Scenario: I am in my opponents half guard with my right leg wrapped up
- plant both hands on the mat
- get up on your feet
- clear my right knee pasth his thigh
- cut his right leg using your right knee and point and drive it towards my left heel, point your toes so that it slips past his legs
- with your left hand grab the back of his right tricep and get your hips down and sit thru with your right leg behind his right shoulder
- keep your head down so he can’t frame up and create space
Be prepared IF my opponent underhooks my arm when I put my hands to the mat and pop up on my feet:
- do a whizzer on his arm and grab his right side lapel
- cut his right leg using your right knee and point and drive it towards my left heel, point your toes so that it slips past his legs
- he will want to turn and get on his knees, stay on your toes and spin around his back
- he will be in the turtle position, you should end up after spinning on his right side
- your left foot will be on the mat behind his rear, your right knee will be on the mat, this is important because then your opponent will not be able to reach for it
- left elbow on the left side of his hip and try and get your right hand under his chin and grab his lapel
Mount armbar technique (2nd half of the private)
Scenario: you are in the mount position
- you have your feet grapevined or crossed (whatever you prefer) and your left hand is posted far above his head
- with your right arm, work it to his right arm and grab the back of his triceps
- pull it across your chest and apply pressure, your right foot comes to his gut with the toes pointing to the 2 o’clock position, left leg lays parallel to his back
- apply the kimura grip on his arm
- swing your left leg and clear his head, try and swing it past his head
- squeeze the knees together, flatten him out by straightening your legs over his head and keeping it heavy
- suck him in if you have to to get your hips under his shoulder, do not give him any space to get his shoulder to the mat
- finish the armbar
Note: think of yourself as a tripod, if you only have 2 points it’s easy to bump and roll you

We learned 2 take downs today.
The Gracie take down
First scenario: you are up against an opponent and he is throwing punches, just walk into him with your hands in front of your face, palms out.
- once you get inside his arms put your face to his chest
- lock your hands behind his back
- pull his hips into you while driving your face/head into his chest bending him like a backward C
- fall onto him into the mount
The second scenario take down happens to be a continuation from the first one mentioned above, you have your face in his chest and you have your grip behind his back but the difference is now your opponent steps to the side and has you in a whizzer. Note: your opponent may have some wrestling skills
- grap his left wrist and your right arm should be around his waist, holding his belt
- drop your right leg behind his feet and sit down on your butt tripping your opponent backwards
- pull your right arm from under him and proceed to side control
Note: in a confrontation always talk with your hands in front of you not down and when it’s time to pull the trigger go for it. If your hands are down you are asking to get your face smashed.

Position 1, mount to an armbar:
- from side control (position 1) remember to drive your hip to your opponents hip, left hand behind your opponents neck in his collar, right hand on his side under his left shoulder and your left leg is driving into him using your chest on his ribs. If he is not grimacing you are doing it wrong.
- he is going to want to turn into you to shrimp out, to prevent this drive your left shoulder to the side of his face, he is also going to want to try and get his left hand and push off, lock your hands together and bring it up to the side of his head, or with your left hand grip under his left armpit and use your right hand to crawl the mat to move his arm away.
- slide your knee across his belly and over for the mount, squeeze your legs together once you are in the mounted position
- bring your right knee to where your left hand was, work your right hand under his left arm, windshield wipe your left foot and lean to the right, stay heavy on him
- bear hug his trapped arm and swing your right leg over his head for the armbar
