Starting from your opponents closed guard:
- grip his belt with your right hand and drive your elbow in his inner thigh
- put your left hand on the inside of his right thigh and grip the gi material
- post up on your left leg and move it step by step behind you until he breaks his guard
- step thru with either your left or right leg
Note: use your arms to block his legs from getting between the two of you
Once you pass his guard and in side control a submission to think about is the baseball choke
- take his gi out of his belt and feed it to your left hand which is under his head
- with your right hand apply a bat grip over your left hand and put your elbows together and switch your hips and pull his head toward you

Today we did something a little different. We will be doing basic warm-ups for a month, this month it is:
10 reps of each on both sides
• cross collar choke
• armbar
• scissor sweep
Passing the guard: once your opponent opens his guard 1) your right knee goes to your left knee and circles clockwise to block his legs from closing again. 2) your elbows should be tight against you and on the outside of your knee.
Keeping your hands close to you will allow you to defend easily.
Toriano pass: 1) grab the material on the outside of your opponents knees, there shouldn’t be any slack for him to move away from 2) with straight arms push his knees together and nail it to the mat (press your knuckles on to his knees). 3) your legs are behind you and walk around him into side control.
Using your shoulder when you pass is also acceptable.

Butterfly guard: 1) get your feet in between your opponents legs. 2) get your left arm under his right arm and reach around and grab his belt, right arm reaches around his left arm and grabs the gi material behind his tricep and press your head against his throat. 3) pull and turn to make him lose his balance and kick your left leg out to sweep him.
Passing the guard from your opponents butterfly: your opponent has you in his butterfly guard. 1) get your arms under his, and grab his sides and really suck him into you. 2) kick out your right leg so that it is straight and place it next to your left leg. 3) with either hand you can reach under and grab his trapped leg (right), grab the foot or ankle or even the gi. 4) keep your hips low, keeping pressure on his leg and hips pin it to the mat and walk around it to side control
Toriano pass: an explosive pass 1) grab your opponents gi material in the inside of his knees and push it down, so his feet is on the mat. 2) push his legs to one side (for this instruction, it is to the right). 3) drive your left shoulder into his gut to pass.

Passing guard: your opponent is on his back. 1) grab both his pants sleeve and pull together and make your fist touch each other. 2) push his legs to the right. 3) turn your left shoulder to his right leg and slide it down until you reach his stomach. 4) with your left hand let go of his pant sleeve and proceed to side control.
Clock choke from the turtle position: your opponent turned into the turtle position not allowing you to go to side control. 1) place your left hand on his belt or his left side. 2) right hand grabs the back of his collar. 3) left knee is behind your opponent. 4) your right foot should be a little to the side of him. 5) using your right leg strength pull him in an angle towards your. 6) once you’ve opened him up, slide your right hand around his neck and grab his lapel. 7) with your left hand underhook his arm and grab his left wrist.
drop your weight over his head and bring your head to the mat facing away from him. 9) begin to walk around him making the choke tighter.

Breaking & passing guard: when trying to pass your opponent guard you want to have a good base and posture. Having a good posture means having a strong core, tighten your core (abs) and lower back. 1) when you begin to pass your opponents guard, have your right elbow tight against your side and on his left thigh applying pressure, your right hand should be over his leg holding on to his gi pants, your left arm should be on his belt/pants area. 2) place your right knee under his butt cheek. 3) move your left leg back. 4) in the same motion, push away from your opponent using your arms and your lower back to break his guard. 5) quickly bring your left leg back in, with the space created make sure to bring that same leg back in quickly to block his right leg. 6) dorsi flex your left leg as you pin his leg to the ground. 7) swing your right leg over and apply pressure to your opponents chest by mashing your shoulder into his chest and getting your left arm under his head and onto side control.
Submission from side control (gi choke): after passing your opponents guard you are in side control. 1) your left hand should be under his head. 2) pull your gi out using your right hand and put the end of your gi in your mouth and bite it. This will give you an opportunity to defend from your opponents arm and this will allow you to pass the gi from your mouth to your left hand. 3) with your right hand grip the gi above your left like a baseball bat. 4) bring your right elbow all the way across his chest and past his shoulders. 5) slide your right leg under your left so that your hips turn. 5) turn your upper body to the left so that you have your back to his chest, this will cause a submission.
