How to defend a failed triangle

June 15th, 2011 by jgatienza

You have your opponent in a triangle and he stands and stacks you and he grabs your color and begins to pass, immediately put your left hand on your opponent’s wrist and push his elbow away with your right hand, your left foot should be behind your butt and shrimp under his arm and into guard or another triangle attempt.

Takedowns, triangle

May 2nd, 2011 by jgatienza

Getting a hand in the collar:
From standing position with your left hand grab the right side of his collar and then feed your right hand to his collar.

2 takedown techniques:
From standing position/throw
You and your opponent grab on the same side (right) gi except his hand is above yours, take your left hand and grab his sleeve, with your left foot step diagonally and pull his grip off your collar, put your head to his bicep and drop to your knees so that you are perpendicular under his arm for the takedown.

This time around your opponent’s arm is under yours instead of above, grab his sleeve, do not be squared up with him, be on an angle, place your right foot on his hip and fall to the mat. Keep hold of his sleeve when he follows you to the mat swing your legs over his shoulder, crook of your knee to his neck and lock up the triangle.

Guard Pass (Opponent is on his back and you are standing up):

  • grab the inside of his gi pants by his knees, keep your elbows parallel with them to prevent them from looping around them
  • with your right hand cross grip and grab the bottom of his gi pant
  • step back and pull and push away his leg and collapse on his hip

Inverted triangle from your guard:

  • grab your opponents hips, open your guard and place your feet on your opponents hips
  • push out and turn to your right side, keep your feet on his hips
  • place your right foot behind your left foot
  • take your left foot and wrap it around his neck (from the left side), pull his sleeves
  • lock up your legs for the triangle

Omaplata escape:

  • put your head and shoulder to the mat
  • pull away from your opponent
  • roll over your right shoulder and get to your knees

Triangle and triangle defense

August 10th, 2010 by jgatienza

Triangle defense:

  •  first triangle defense is to wrap your right arm around your opponents left leg
  • head up and elevate up raising your opponents hips up in the air when you come back down you create a little space between your opponents hip and your neck
  • slip your left hand in the space and work it thru countering the triangle

Applying the triangle while your opponent is defending it

  • your opponent may try to collapse on your leg,
  • place your right hand on your knee and place your elbow to the mat if he tries to collapse on your leg, this will stop him from putting his weight on your leg
  • if he raises up and tries to work his hand between your leg, keep your feet locked behind him, you might have to open it when he starts to get his hand in, grab it like you are doing the “bro” handshake and then finish him with the arm bar
  • remember to squeeze the knees together

Triangle

Starting from your closed guard

  • open your guard, push his left hand between your legs and throw your right leg over his shoulder
  • lock your legs and raise your hips up and push his right arm across your stomach
  • reach up and with your left hand grab your right ankle, put your left foot on the mat or on his leg and push away to break him down
  • lock your feet together again in a figure four and pull down on his head for the submission
Note: if he tries to stack you crawl back using your shoulders or transition into an armbar
